NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — A family member of a missing 63-year-old man tells 8News Sister Station WAVY that crews found his body inside his boat.
The U.S. Coast Guard has suspended its search for a 63-year-old boater who was last seen on the Elizabeth River over the weekend.
Coast Guard officials said Paul Youngk was seen on Saturday, April 20, on his sailing vessel Grafin, which had run aground off Fort Norfolk.
Captain Deputy Sector Commander Samson Stevens said Youngk decided to stay on the sailboat overnight and planned to remove it in the morning — but at some point during the night things took a turn.
Coast Guard officials said Youngk was reportedly on the boat when it began taking on water and eventually submerged early Sunday morning.
“The rigging and the lines that are on the deck of the vessel as it went underwater and tangled in that area and divers have a high safety requirement that they don’t want to become casualites,” said Stevens.
The Coast Guard said its search for Youngk was suspended Sunday night.
Several agencies responded to the area over the weekend to investigate, including the Virginia Marine Resources Commission (VMRC), the Norfolk Police Department, Norfolk Fire-Rescue and the Hampton Police Division.
