A horse that was found in a ditch Friday morning in Chesapeake had to be put down.

Photos of the attempted rescue, posted to Twitter by the Chesapeake Fire Department, showed the horse lying down sideways in the ditch.

The scene was located  off Herring Ditch Road, a couple of miles away from Dominion Boulevard South.

Officials said the attempted rescue required special skills by the department’s technical rescue team.

It is unclear how the horse ended up in the ditch.
