CREWE, Va. (WRIC) — (UPDATE 1:55 p.m.) — According to the Wilkerson Company website, the business was founded in 1947 and is a third-generation tire shop specializing in retreading aircraft tires.
Tony Staylor, an employee of 26 years, saw the fire starting and told 8News employees attempted to put the blaze out with fire extinguishers.
Staylor told 8News the flames moved quickly, and within five to ten minutes, the place where he made his livelihood for over a quarter of a century was up in flames.
Staylor also told 8News that a blower motor overheated caused the fire and that there are no injuries.
11:45 a.m. — Eyewitnesses in Crewe, Va. reporting a large fire currently taking place at Wilkerson Aircraft Tire (206 W Virginia Ave., Crewe, VA 23930).
Crews from Crewe, Blackstone, Burkeville, Victoria Fire and Rescue, Farmville Fire and Fort Pickett Fire and Rescue are all on scene.
Wilkerson Aircraft Tire is a third-generation, family-run business founded in 1947, that specializes in retreading aircraft tires. Regional airlines and private pilots are the business’s main clientele.
