HARRISONBURG, Va. (WRIC) — Authorities released new details in the alleged abduction of a Maryland woman and her granddaughter.
Elizabeth Rodriguez Rubio, 48, and her granddaughter, Angie Carolina Rodriguez, 12, are still missing two days after their alleged abductor was arrested in Pennsylvania.
Police say the pair was supposed to be taken by Hareton Jamie Rodriguez Sariol to a home in Maryland, but they never made it. They were last seen getting into Sariol’s red 2-door Honda Civic at Dukes Plaza, near Ollie’s Bargain Outlet in Harrisonburg around 1:30 p.m. on Sunday.
An hour later, Hareton took Elizabeth and Angie to the Walmart shopping center along Burgess Road, police say. Over 12 hours later, the Civic was found fully engulfed in flames around 3 a.m. on Monday on Interstate 66 in Warren County. When police arrived on the scene, no one was around the car.
Virginia State Police say there were no signs of foul play in the fire. The car has been sent back to Harrisonburg to be processed for evidence.
Family of Rubio told WHSV that Hareton had been a family friend but, over time, had become increasingly obsessed with Elizabeth. They say he called Elizabeth’s daughter to say he had dropped them off in Maryland on Monday, but when the family didn’t hear back from her or Angie — and saw reports of the burned car — they became extremely worried.
The family says they called Maryland police, who forced entry to the home and found no signs of the grandmother or granddaughter.
On Tuesday afternoon, an AMBER Alert was issued for Angie, along with a Critically Missing Adult Alert for Elizabeth.
Around 5 p.m. Tuesday, Hareton was arrested in Lakawanna, Pennsylvania driving a white Volvo tractor trailer. According to family, Hareton’s cell phone was also found destroyed.
Hareton remains in Pennsylvania for questioning and is awaiting extradition back to Harrisonburg.
Family members believe Elizabeth and Angie are somewhere between Harrisonburg and Washington, D.C
