NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — After years of construction and hype, Norfolk’s Ikea store will open on Wednesday.
The Swedish home furnishings company has built a 331,000-square-foot store in the northwestern corner of Interstate 64 and Northampton Boulevard. It sits just down the street from Norfolk Premium Outlets, which opened in June 2017.
The store will feature the largest solar rooftop array in Hampton Roads, charging stations for electric vehicles and a 354-seat restaurant.
Store manager, Charlie Plisco, says the model rooms inside were designed specifically for the area.
“We came in a year ago and actually visited a dozen homes to see how people live in Hampton Roads and we offer solutions to the way we all live here. For example, we don’t use garages much in this area for our cars we use it for storage so we offer some storage solutions in the garage,” said Plisco.
People can begin lining up for the store’s grand opening at 5 a.m. on April 10.
Plisco says there will be live music starting at 6 a.m and there will be a limited number of giveaways.
