ACCOMACK COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — Fourteen elementary school children were taken to the hospital after a school bus crashed in Accomack County Wednesday morning.

Police said the bus was headed to Pungoteague Elementary School, driving north on Pungoteague Road, when the driver suddenly experienced a medical emergency, causing the bus to run off the road, into a ditch and hit a power pole.

Of the 25 children on board, 14 children — ages five to 10 years old — were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The driver, 66-year-old Robert Sylvester Walker, of Onancock, was also taken to the hospital. Walker was charged with reckless driving and failing to maintain proper control.

The road where the crash occurred is closed to traffic and the Virginia Department of Transportation has established detours in the area.
