CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WRIC) — Fans of the UVA men’s basketball team are preparing for an exciting, eventful weekend as the ‘Hoos are heading to the Final Four in Minneapolis on Saturday.
For the first time in 35 years, the team will play in the Final Four. The community in Charlottesville spoke to 8News on Tuesday about the buzz surrounding UVA’s chances at a national title.
Students and alumni grabbed Final Four merchandise before it all went.
“It’s flying off the shelves,” said Cristy Huffman, the executive director for UVA Bookstores and Cavalier Computers.
Two students told 8News that they bought last minute flights to Minneapolis.
“I’m so excited,” one student said. “We decided that in the airport we are going to wear all UVA gear.”
Back in Charlottesville, in order to control the crowd, one popular sports bar, Boylan Heights, sold tickets to get in to watch the game.
“We sold out in about 45 minutes,” said one employee.
Fans who didn’t get a ticket can watch on the big screen for free at Paramount Theater. Students and locals are predicting a win from UVA, with many saying it’s a new day for the university.
“Sixty-eight, 60 for the ‘Hoos,” another student said. “It’s a new era for UVA sports, and I, I can’t believe that I’m here to experience it.”
The team is scheduled to head out to Minneapolis on Wednesday before their game against Auburn on April 6.
