Virginia State Police, other police forces across Virginia retiring K9 officers trained to sniff out weed

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Recreational marijuana is just over a month away from legalization in Virginia. Now, the K9s who were trained to sniff it out are retiring.

Virginia State Police are retiring 13 of their cannabis-sniffing K9s.

Local police across the state are also releasing theirs from duty.

Most departments are bringing in new puppies and training them to detect other illegal drugs like heroin.
