Westboro Church group met with chants from counterprotesters in Richmond

News

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — A group of about six Westboro Baptist Church members demonstrating outside the Virginia State Capitol Monday morning was met by more than a hundred counter-protesters.

Westboro was around Central Virginia on Monday, protesting northern Virginia Del. Danica Roem — the first openly transgender elected official in the Commonwealth.

Chants and music from counterprotesters subdued the appearance from members of the Westboro Baptist Church in Richmond. The church, known for displaying anti-gay signs and showing dissent for LGBTQ issues, was founded by Rev. Fred Phelps in 1955.

The protest lasted about half an hour before the group moved to its next location.
