RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Congratulations to freshman Jada Starling of Virginia Union University for being named the 8News ‘Athlete of the Month’ for October.
Starling is a freshman on the Panthers’ volleyball program who has helped propel the program to its longest winning streak in a dozen years.
Starling’s play has earned her three CIAA ‘Rookie of the Week’ honors.
Starling’s coach at Virginia Union, Christina Lovick, told 8News about Starling dedication and focus.
“Jada is all about business. She comes on the court, she does what she needs to do,” Lovick said. “She is extremely coachable. She never has any excuses.”
Starling’s career at Virginia Union almost didn’t happen. In her junior year of high school, Starling suffered a torn ACL.
The injury almost kept her on the sidelines but Starling said she used it as motivation to get back on the court.
“It has been a struggle,” Starling said. “Everyday waking up in pain. I couldn’t walk the way I wanted. I couldn’t run the way I wanted to but I went to a volleyball game, a club volleyball game for my club team. I watched them play. I have to get back on the court. I just have to play volleyball. I don’t know what I would do without it.”
