RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Virginia Union golf coach E. Lee Coble is heading to the 119th U.S. Open in Pebble Beach, CA where he will work as a member of the TV Rules Escort Committee.
“We get action shots. We get them in fariway, tee box and the green,” said Coble describing his job. “What we do is make sure as escorts, as USGA officials, we can get them where they need to be to get the shots they need.”
For Coble this will be his 21st U.S. Open.
“My first U.S. Open was at Pinehurst,” said Coble of the 1999 U.S. Open. “It’s been absolutely wonderful.”
Coble has been a member of the United States Golf Association since 1993 and says he will continue to work the U.S. Open until they stop asking him to.
The role has also provided him the opportunity to play the same golf courses on the Monday following the tournament.
“I played Pebble Beach, shot an 81 and I ran off the golf course,” said Coble. “It’s those kind of moments and things that give you the thrill of being there and wanting to do it again.”
