RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — The Richmond Flying Squirrels have announced their preliminary 2019 roster ahead of next Thursday’s season opener.
The roster, as set by the team’s MLB parent club, the San Francisco Giants, features 13 returning players, eight of the organization’s Top 30 prospects and four players with experience at the major-league level.
Also, for the first time in team history, the Squirrels’ preliminary roster includes two players who were born and raised in the Richmond area: Catcher Matt Winn (J.R. Tucker H.S./Virginia Military Institute) and RHP Connor Overton (Atlee H.S. and Old Dominion University).
Winn is slated to return for his fourth season with the Squirrels and Overton made seven appearances — including two starts — for the team in 2018.
In total, the roster includes a combined 15 seasons and 484 games of major-league experience with the inclusion of pitchers Fernando Abad and Brandon Beachy, first baseman Brock Stassi and outfielder Chris Shaw.
