RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Rams Nation will host one of the eight regionals for The Basketball Tournament (TBT) at the Siegel Center. The tournament will be a $2 million, winner-take-all event.

The tournament came to Richmond in 2018 for the first time and the organizers are not looking back. Eight teams will compete inside the Siegel Center in July for a chance to advance.

“Siegel Center is someplace I always enjoy playing,” Justin Harper, a former University of Richmond and NBA player, said.

Harper, who graduated in 2011, says he’s played basketball in front of big crowds before. He told 8News he’s played in the NBA and overseas. Harper will not be part of the first Spiders’ team to play in The Basketball Tournament.

“Opportunity to play with players you played with before back in college, again, years down with line is exciting,” Harper told 8News.

Mark McGonigal, the director of basketball operations at the University of Richmond, says they jumped at the opportunity to represent the Spiders.

“Anytime you can go nine miles down the road, go in the Siegel Center, incredible environment, and come out with a win it’s an awesome feeling,” McGonigal said. “Siegel center is downtown, so I think there’s a buzz in the area, so I think it’s going to bring a lot of attention to Richmond.”

TBT is in its sixth year and will feature more than 60 players with NBA experience, 23 former college players and international players from across the world. The games will be televised on ESPN and bring money in for the City of Richmond.
