VUU golf prepares for NCAA Regional after first CIAA Championship in 48 years

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Winning the CIAA Championship was the first for Virginia Union golf since 1971, ending a 48 year title drought.

“In 1971 I was finishing up my junior year in college,” said head coach E. Lee Coble.

Entering the season the Panthers felt like they had a special team and all of that was confirmed by their success on the course.

“We had chemistry and everybody kind of came together,” said senior Allan Day.

“I felt so good about the recruiting class this year,” added Coach Coble. “And the group coming in was absolutely incredible.”

Next up is a trip to the NCAA Atlantic Regional where the Panthers want to make a name for themselves.

“We can compete as a team,” said freshman Alkin Barkley. “We’ve got a pretty good chance to try and make the school proud.”

“My expectation is that we qualify, finish in the top three and we can because this year we have broken 600 at least four times,” said Coach Coble. “I told the guys once you break 600 you can compete with anybody.”
