CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WRIC) — Hundreds of fans have gathered at the John Paul Jones Arena to wait on UVA’s men’s basketball team to return to Charlottesville.
The celebrations are still ongoing as fans can’t get over their excitement of Monday’s historic win for UVA.
Four Charlottesville natives spoke with 8News who say they’ve been waiting for decades to call the UVA men’s basketball team champions.
All four were born and raised in Charlotteville and are big UVA fans.
They have been waiting for more than 50 years and after seeing so many disappointing games they are proud to call their team champions.
“It’s like it was destined and I’m glad that we finally received that accolade,” said one of the natives.
One man, Dwayne Broffit said his father was a big UVA fan as well.
He passed away before the men’s basketball team could claim a National Championship.
“He didn’t get to see their glory years. It was always next year, next year. It wasn’t too good but they’ve progressed a long way. He would have been proud of them I know,” said Broffit.
Donnie Stribling said it’s not only a win for the team and for fans. It’s a win for the city still healing after the deadly ‘Unite The Right’ rally in 2017.
“I hope that this will help bring the city back together,” said Stribling.
