HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — An increase in security will soon be seen across multiple Henrico schools, the superintendent announced in a lengthy email to school staff, students and families Sunday evening.

The announcement comes after a gun was found in a student’s backpack at Holman Middle School Friday morning, one of several instances this school year in which a weapon was found at a Henrico, Richmond or Chesterfield school.

Sen. Kaine (D-Va.), who has been in the Senate since 2013, announced his re-election bid alongside his wife, Anne Holton, outside a Richmond cafe where he was hosting an economic development roundtable with young state workers, advocates and others.

Democratic senators encouraged Kaine to pursue a third term, he said, but President Joe Biden did not ask him to run. Kaine, 64, listed four reasons for his decision, which he said he “grappled” with and made just last week.

HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — A Glen Allen Cultural Arts Center program is aiming to give a place to caregivers and their loved ones with Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia a place to get creative and open up their minds.

The Opening Minds Through Art Program leaders want to help the more than 20,000 people with Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia living at home with an unpaid caregiver across the greater Richmond region.

When Linda Geoghegan’s sister told her she’d get to come back to the Opening Minds Through Art program for a second session, she smiled big, knowing she’d get to come back to the Cultural Arts Center to paint and create.

HANOVER COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) – One substitute teacher in Ashland decided to start a project that would give back to folks in the community in need.

Emily Monroe and her family regularly stuffed a community box in Richmond when they realized Ashland didn’t have one.

That’s when Monroe created the “Kind Hive” community box at the S. Taylor Street Park in Ashland. The box is named for her “hive” who helped build the box — her daughters Eva and Piper Monroe and her brother, Joe Cafarella.
