‘It was such a blessing’: Chesterfield mother says Conexus Vision made a big difference in her daughter’s life

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — As associate principal for Bellwood Elementary school in Chesterfield County, Tiffany House has seen firsthand how Conexus Vision has helped students in her school both see and perform better in the classroom. But Tiffany also sees Conexus from a different point of view. “As a mom, you just want to make sure you’re doing what’s best for your child, you know, making sure they have everything they need to succeed,” House said. Tiffany and her husband had been alerted early on by their pediatrician that Sky, their daughter, might have a vision issue but they didn’t know how bad it had become over time. https://www.wric.com/community/it-was-such-a-blessing-chesterfield-mother-says-conexus-vision-made-a-big-difference-in-her-daughters-life/

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) – One Central Virginia non-profit has created a program that steps in where Richmond, Chesterfield and Henrico families need it most.

The folks with the Rescue180 program are taking care of families in neighborhoods with basic needs that most people take for granted, like toothbrushes, toothpaste and food.

Some of them are grandparents taking care of and feeding multiple grandchildren.

Trooper is ‘lucky to be alive’ after being dragged …

News /

A Delaware man is facing multiple charges after allegedly dragging a state trooper down the interstate Friday.

The suspect, 38-year-old Milton Jermaine Lewis, was arrested in Henrico County just a couple of hours after crashing his car.

Lewis is facing at least ten charges, including having a concealed weapon after troopers found a gun inside his SUV.

A crumpled vehicle is what’s left after the terrifying incident. Police said once the trooper pulled over Lewis, he became combative and drove off, trapping the trooper in the passenger side door of Lewis’ vehicle. The trooper was then dragged on Interstate 295 for three miles as Lewis drove at 115 miles per hour.

“They had an altercation between the two of them and somehow the trooper was pulled into the vehicle. The trooper was inside of the vehicle when the suspect drove off at a very high rate of speed,” Virginia State Police Sergeant Jessica Shehan described.

Lewis then hit two tractor-trailers and crashed near the Creighton Road exit. After crashing, he got out and ran away from the vehicle.

The trooper has some cuts and bruises, but Sergeant Shehan said he’s lucky to be alive. Lewis also has minor injuries.

New mammogram tech at Henrico hospital detecting …

HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) – A new type of mammogram at Henrico Doctors’ Hospital’s Sarah Cannon Cancer Institute is helping patients catch breast cancer early — before it has the chance to spread.

Contrast enhanced mammography can detect up to two to three times as many cancers as a regular mammogram, according to the hospital.

Dr. Ryan Gabriel, breast imaging director at Henrico Doctors’ Hospital, said they have a 90% chance of finding breast cancer with the new technology, while with a regular mammogram, they only have a 50% chance of finding breast cancer in women with extremely dense breasts.

Chesterfield stores kick off Black Friday shopping …

News /

It’s Black Friday and the National Retail Federation expects it to be a record-breaking year for shopping this weekend. The doors at JCPenney open at 5 a.m. with customers lining up to get doorbuster deals. It’s one of the earliest opening times for a department store for Black Friday. JCPenney’s clothes, jewelry, shoes and home items are marked way down, while Bath and Body Works stores are giving customers an extra 20% off and a buy three get three free deal. The National Retail Federation estimates more than 166 million people are going to shop through Cyber Monday.

The federation reports 60% of holiday shoppers started looking and buying early this month.

Walmart stores have a lot of rollbacks and started planning for the rush of customers a while back, according to spokesperson Jessica Martello.

“This year, to prepare for the holidays, Walmart has hired about 40,000 associates to help out with just the influx of all the shopping and that includes in-store associates, distribution centers, fleet drivers and more. So, we’re definitely prepared for a busy holiday season,” she told 8News.

Gift cards are still a favorite item this year. Experts say spending on them is expected to reach more than $28 billion.
